During World War Two, Princess Elizabeth joined the war effort, despite objections from her father, the King. She trained as a truck mechanic and served in the womens’ Auxiliary Territorial Service (ATS).

According to the Evening Standard, it was tough for Elizabeth to get her father's support, as according to LIFE Magazine in 1944 he decided that she “should not join any of the women’s auxiliaries, nor work in a factory". The magazine continued: “But Betts had other ideas. It was not surprising that not long afterward the Palace made a straight-face announcement that the King had been pleased to grant an honorary commission as second subaltern in the ATS to Her Royal Highness Princess Elizabeth.”

Princess Elizabeth learned to tear apart, repair and build engines, as newspapers at the time dubbed her “Princess Auto Mechanic”. She also learned to drive a number of different military vehicles, including trucks and ambulances

During the holidays, young Princess Margaret and Princess Elizabeth were known to enjoy dressing up and taking part in Christmas plays. The sisters would dress up in extravagant costumes, for productions such as Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, Aladdin and Old Mother Red Riding Boots.

Elizabeth's performance in Aladdin has a special place in her life, as it was during Prince Philip's visit to the family, where he watched the then-Princess in the panto.

A royal wedding is a spectacle like no other, and the Queen's in 1947 was no different. With her wedding coming just two years after the end of WW2, the country was still dealing with rationing. The then Princess was forced to collect ration coupons to create the iconic dress.

According to Hello!, the Queen's gown was made from Chinese silk adorned with pearl and diamante-encrusted flowers along the fitted bodice and the 15-foot train. It was designed and created by Norman Hartnell, with the gown costing £30,000 at the time.

The Queen looks very different in a more casual look while on a royal tour in 1970. The monarch can be seen wearing a bomber jacket, trousers and headscarf, in a break from the normal more-tailored skirts and dresses we're used to seeing.

The Duke of Edinburgh and the Queen can be seen returning to the royal yacht 'Britannia' at Ship Cove, during the royal tour of New Zealand on March 18, 1970. The royal family were there in connection with the bicentenary of Captain Cook's 1770 expedition to Australia. They were at Ship Cove to watch a re-enactment of Cook's landing there, from the vessel 'Endeavour'.

Considered the Queen's 'boldest ever look', when the Queen attended the Royal Variety Performance in 1999 she broke from her usual style, and instead wore a multi-coloured dress that stood out from all the rest. The top of the dress was covered in sequins in a variety of colours, all designed in a patchwork style.

The bottom part of the dress was just as bold and eye-catching, with a bright yellow skirt decorated with orange lines diagonally across. The Queen finished off the dazzling gown with a sparkling diamond necklace and matching bracelet, along with drop diamond earrings.

The Queen is known to opt for bright clothing, reportedly to ensure she can be seen and stand out in crowds. However, one particularly bright outfit got a lot of attention from the public.

For her 90th birthday in 2016, the Queen sported a bright, lime green outfit and matching hat. The unique colour hilariously matched perfectly with the shade of green used by TV and film productions for visual effects screens.

As you can imagine, those online took the opportunity to make some hilarious edits of the Queen's look, photoshopping different backgrounds over her outfit.
