Marvel’s Avengers is full of MCU skins now, though Crystal Dynamics’ latest addition to the lineup has Thor fans a bit confused.

Marvel’s Avengers has gone from having no MCU skins to an abundance of them. Over the past several months, fans have seen everything from Iron Man 2’s Briefcase suit to Black Widow’s Snow suit in the marketplace, with Spider-Man and Black Panther getting plenty of MCU-inspired outfits as well. Thor is no different, though the latest skin for the hero is an unexpected pick to say the least.

Marvel’s Avengers fans can purchase a few MCU looks for Thor, with his black armor from Avengers: Endgame available alongside his suit from the first Avengers film. Prior to the latest skin being added, the popular gladiator armor from Thor: Ragnarok was made available, with many fans loving the short hair Thor skin. While Thor’s latest skin looks solid enough from a design standpoint, taking anything from Thor: The Dark World is a bit of a shocker.

Thor’s latest outfit comes straight from Thor: The Dark World, with this particular set of armor only featuring in that film. As many MCU fans will surely know, Thor: The Dark World is widely considered the worst entry in the MCU - or at least near the bottom of the list with The Incredible Hulk. While it still has a positive rating with 66% on Rotten Tomatoes, beating out the divisive Eternals and its 47% critic rating, that film has a higher audience score than The Dark World.

The reasons why Thor: The Dark World is considered such a disappointment are numerous, with the only real upsides of the film being directly tied to Tom Hiddleston’s Loki. Many were disappointed to see such a large focus on Jane, as Natalie Portman’s chemistry with Chris Hemsworth was severely lacking. Even more disastrous were the Dark Elves and Malekith, some of the worst villains in the MCU. Further, with Hemsworth’s Thor not yet connecting with the audience like he would go on to do in Thor: Ragnarok, he was hard to care about during the movie.

In Crystal Dynamics’ defense, there is nothing wrong with Thor’s suit in the film. In fact, it is a fair bit different from his armor in the original Avengers movie. This suit gives Thor a beard and some sleeveless arms, with a gold pattern seen on his chestplate. While it is far from his flashiest MCU costume, it is hardly a bad thing to have it in the game, even if it is a bit puzzling to see it included. Still, it makes a bit more sense when looking at how many MCU skins have been added for the Norse god.

Unlike Iron Man, Spider-Man, and Captain America, who have received numerous costumes in the films and are a great supply of MCU skins, Thor has not had as many distinct looks. While he has had more than Hulk, his most recognizable costumes are already available in Marvel’s Avengers. With this in mind, Crystal Dynamics had to scrape the bottom of the barrel for another Thor suit, pulling from the hero’s worst solo film to find his final unique MCU costume.

Since Thor: The Dark World’s costume has been added, every meaningful MCU suit for Thor can now be purchased in Marvel’s Avengers. While Thor: Love and Thunder will provide at least one new costume for Crystal Dynamics to add to the game, fans should not expect any more MCU suits for Thor until the movie debuts. As for this skin from The Dark World, it illustrates how suit changes for Thor have been less flashy and less prevalent, as the developers had no choice but to pull a costume from the black sheep of the MCU.

Marvel’s Avengers is available now on PC, PS4, PS5, Stadia, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
