HSM - Don't delay overdue eye tests

UVEX IS urging employers to rebook overdue eye checks as soon as possible to ensure employees are wearing appropriate PPE at work.

Limited access to opticians during the Covid-19 pandemic has caused delays in workers securing new or replacement safety prescription eyewear. With restrictions now lifted, it is time to identify any prescriptions that have lapsed to ensure workers' health and safety isn't at risk.

uvex's prescription eyewear service can help fulfil pent-up demand for customised safety eyewear by supporting and facilitating the interface between the employer/wearer, the optician, and the essential PPE. The service includes access to a user-friendly, web-based system for selecting and ordering safety and non-safety prescription eyewear.

Once the employee has visited the optician, spectacles are manufactured by uvex, keeping costs and lead-times down. Unlike voucher systems, the uvex system invoices on an order-by-order basis through the existing PPE provider, meaning there is no need to set up a new account.

A choice of metal, plastic and wraparound frame styles for safety or office use are available. Where a risk of impact has been identified, uvex's eyewear always comprises polycarbonate lenses which fulfil the requirements for impact protection within the EN 166 norm. In some "safety prescription" eyewear, CR39 plastic (the norm for non-safety corrective eyewear) is incorrectly used, which does not provide sufficient impact protection.

uvex's automated system can be set up for organisations of all sizes, and it can be programmed to only display pre-agreed frame and lens options based on workplace hazards. A straightforward three-tier pricing structure for single vision, bifocal and varifocal lenses – as well as competitively priced extras such as anti-reflective and anti-fog coatings, transition lenses, or sun glare tints – means there are no hidden costs. The uvex system also provides historical data to help managers and their employees keep track of eye health.
