Captain's Day for the Men at Sidmouth Bowls Club | Sidmouth Herald

Last week was all about our Ladies Captains Day at Sidmouth Bowls Club and this week was over to the Men.

Some 32 players turned out to play in their various shades of Yellow for Captain Mike’s team and Blue for Vice Captain Stewart’s team. Finding Yellow shirts proved a challenge, with one player rushing off to the charity shops and returning with what looked like a ladies’ blouse, which was a tad tight! We even had a couple of Hi Vis jackets.

The morning brought a lot of much needed rain and the afternoon was good for bowling. At the halfway mark, our ladies served a lovely ‘bowlers tea’ - we seem to have been eating lots of lovely cakes, sandwiches and cream teas this season, which hasn't helped the waistline.

Captain Mike also invited some ‘Golden Oldies’ and all 10 of them thoroughly enjoyed themselves. Thanks to Chris, Jill, Susie and Janet for the teas and to Tony, with my help, for the bar.

The sad news, well for Captain Mike anyway, was that all his 5 rinks lost. Of course, that was good news for Vice Captain Stewart, as all his teams won in a terrific display of bowls. The overall score ended Captain 68 - Vice 95. The top rink was Denis Griffiths, Stewart Thomson and skip Ken Wheeler, 21 - 7

Last week, we sent a team to Bradninch for a friendly match. Everyone who went said what a great club it was and the players so welcoming and good company. In these away friendly matches, it is really so good to meet other clubs and players. It was a very tight game, with Sidmouth losing by just one shot, 81 –82. Our top rink was Julie Wevill, Jill Mison and skip David Bates, 20 - 13

Don't forget, those of you that wish to have a go at this great game, just turn up on Saturday September 10 between 11am and 1pm, or 2pm and 4pm, for our ‘Taster Day’. No obligation to join the club, just give bowls a go, you might love it.
